Location :
County of Herefordshire
Ross-on-Wye

Summary : Hotel, built in 1837 on the site of the palace or manor house of the Bishops of Hereford. This stood at the west end of the churchyard and was ruinous by 1509. Excavations carried out prior to the construction of the hotel revealed a vaulted chamber, thought to have formed part of the medieval building. The Bishops palace is recorded as defensible in 1166-67. The 19th century hotel is three storeyed and stuccoed.
More information : (SO 597241) Royal Hotel on site of (NAT) Bishop's Palace (NR). (1)

The Bishops Manor House, Ross, stood at the west end of the churchyard, but it was in ruins before 1509. Workmen, excavating in 1837 prior to the erection of The Royal Hotel (3) found a vaulted chamber at a depth of 7 ft which was presumably the dungeon of the manor house. (2-3)

There are no visible remains of the Bishops Manor House.
