More information : (SO 587389) Backbury Camp (NR) Ethelbert's Camp (NR). (1-2) Ethelbert's Camp. The ground falls away on all sides, the slope being precipitious from the southern half of the camp. The defences consist of triple rampart on the N with medial ditches; the innermost and outermost ramparts are continued along the W face, the latter in an altered and reduced form; an ancient landslide has largely obliterated the defences on the E face. There are 2 entrances, that on the N being formed by the stopping of the two outer ramparts, the curved turning inwards of the inner rampart and the formation of two banks to the E and S of the curved return. The SW entrance is a simple cutting through the single rampart, approached by a natural causeway. (3-4) The camp on Backbury Hill is traditionally associated with St Ethelbert. Bannister could find no historical evidence for this and believed the association "to be a pious fancy of later ages". (5) Name changed to Backbury Camp 1.11.1926. (6) SO 587389 Backbury Camp is as described by RCAHM. Published survey 25" revised. (7)
