Summary : Timber framed house adjoining the rear of number 62 High Street. Stuccoed timber frame and brick with a hipped plain tile roof. The house dates from between 1620 and 1630, this date is crucial because it means that the building may be one of the few survivors of the Great Fire of Wem. The house was refurbished in the late 17th century, possibly following the fire, and again in the late 18th-early 19th century. A watching brief was carried out during the demolition of the building in 1996. This confirmed that the attic of the number 2 Market Street building was heightened at some point during or after the construction of the number 62 High Street building, probably during the late 18th-early 19th century. The original wattle and daub wall panels were replaced with lath and plaster and later with brick. |
