Historic England Research Records

Monument Number 1106991

Hob Uid: 1106991
Location :
Somerset
Somerset West and Taunton
Oare
Grid Ref : SS8014448707
Summary : A disused quarry originally noted on air photos and interpreted as a possible enclosure. Field survey confirmed it as a quarry with a spoil heap on the lower eastern side. The spoil heap is not visible on aerial photographs. The quarry is possibly the same as that recorded under NMR UID 1107177.
More information : SS 8020 4805 A small circular bank with a hook-shaped extension noted by McDonnell on air photos transcript (1-2).

SS 8014 4871. A disused quarry with spoil heap on lower eastern side, shown on the 1890 Ordnance Survey map (3) has been misinterpreted by McDonnell.

A small oval quarry is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs, centred at SS 8014 4870. The quarry measures approximately 23 metres in diameter. It is not shown on the 1st Edition Ordnance survey map; however, a different quarry is visible at SS 8018 4862 and it is possible that the two have been confused. The spoil heap mentioned by the above authority is not visible and the map reference given above (SS 8020 4805) appears to be erroneous. The quarry is possibly the same as that recorded under NMR UID 1107177 (4-5).
