Monument Number 110947

Hob Uid: 110947
Location :
Shropshire
Shropshire
Coreley
Grid Ref : SO5963076830
Summary : A group of 3 cairns possibly prehistoric, one alleged to be the findspot of a stone ring and beads. A fourth cairn is documented, but no trace remains.
More information : (A: SO 59617680 and B: SO 59627685) Cairns (NR) (1)

Four remarkable 'Carnedds' noted on the summit of Hoar Edge. (2)

The bases of two cairns were located by B.H. St. J. O'Neill in
1932, standing 40 yards apart, south-east of Horseditch,
at the top of a cliff descending sharply to the north-west
at Hoar Edge. (3)

Two small stone rings and a string of beads, found in barrows
on the Hoar Edge. Exhibited to the Cambrian Ant. Assn.
by the Rev.H.Browne. (4)

Two cairns on Hoar Edge.

(A: SO 59617679) The remains of a cairn some 20.0m. in diameter
and now only 0.6m. high.

(B: SO 59627684) This cairn is more complete. It is some
17.0m in diameter and some 1.6m. high. The centre has been opened,
and a pile of stones at SO 59638781 probably came from the cairn.

Surveyed at 1:2500.(5)

The finds exhibited by Rev Browne in 1852 are lost. (6)

'A' and 'B'- no change to previous field report.
At 'C', SO59637683, in between 'A' and 'B' is a third, smaller cairn,
measuring in diameter 7.0m east to west by 6.5m north to south, with
a maximum height of 0.4m. The cairn is composed of small boulders
and stones. There is no evidence to show that the material came from
cairn 'B' (auth 5). No traces of a fourth cairn were found (auth 2).
Condition-fair. Revised group at 1:2500. (7)
