Monument Number 1119632

Hob Uid: 1119632
Location :
Somerset
Somerset West and Taunton
Wootton Courtenay
Grid Ref : SS9511042930
Summary : Aerial photographic evidence was interpreted as a possible deserted medieval farmstead near Huntsham, however field investigation revealed the earthworks to be drainage channels and a post medieval sluice. The settlement was most likely located further north, probably at Huntsham Farm, now Huntsham cottage.
More information : A possible deserted medieval farm was recorded from documentary and AP sources in the Somerset SMR (1-3). Field investigation revealed 2 hollows, some 5m wide and 20m long, centred at SS 9515 4293, and interpreted as drainage channels. The field is very low-lying and marshy, its northern edge is formed by the River Avill. A weir built of stone and river gravel lies at SS 9511 4294 (4). It is recorded on the 25" map of 1889 (5). Huntsham Farm (now Huntsham Cottage) lies to the north, on higher ground away from the floodplain of the river, and was probably the site mentioned in the 14th century documents referred to by authy 3.

The earthworks described above can be seen on several aerial photographs of the area (6)and appear to be a post medieval drainage system, possibly associated with the water meadow visible to the south.
