Summary : Landscape park and gardens to Grimsthorpe Castle covering an area of 1000 hectares. The park was recorded in Domesday and also documented in 1516. A formalised park scheme was in place during the early 17th century. The gardens were probably first laid out circa 1680 but were replaced by Stephen Switzer in 1711. A design for the updating of the park was created by Lancelot Brown in 1771 and included an expansion of the park's area. Most of Switzer's design was replaced during the late 19th century. Gardens were also created between 1960-1970.
More information : Medieval landscape park at Grimsthorpe Castle developed during the 17th and 18th century including work by Capability Brown in 1771-72. Gardens were laid out by George London circa 1690 to the south, and documented in 1707 and 1714. These gardens included geometrical schemes with fountains and kitchen gardens. Further garden development was carried out circa 1720 by Stephen Switzer and were depicted by William Stukeley in 1736. The south parterre was redeveloped in the 19th century and has been maintained in a simplified form. The walled kitchen garden was designed in 1965. (1)
