Summary : The Abbot's Lodge is a timber-framed building probably dating from the late 15th or early 16th century. The original building had an L-plan comprising two timber-framed ranges, the timber-framing consisting of splayed posts, full-height studs and interrupted rails. Both ranges have an open truss one having an ornate cusped tie-beam, collar and struts. These open trusses denote that at least one of the ranges had an open hall, the other possibly formed part of a first floor chamber or solar. In the mid 16th century a third timber-framed range was built adjoining the south end of the original building. This addition matched the form of construction used in the original ranges. The south bay of the addition has a smoke-blackened roof and this bay probably accommodated a kitchen fire. During the early to mid 18th century a brick two-storeyed wing was added to the west wall of the mid 16th century range. |
