Summary : Eastnor Castle is a country house constructed between 1811-20 by Sir Robert Smirke in Neo-Norman and Early English Style. It comprises a large symmetrical building with quatrefoil angle towers and a raised centre. Internal alterations, which were mostly decorative, were carried out by Pugin in 1849-50 and G E Fox during the 1860s. An ornamental garden, adjacent to the south wing of the castle, is visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs. |
More information : (SO 73503687) Eastnor Castle (NAT) (1) Eastnor Castle was begun in 1813 by Sir Robert Smirke. It is a large symmetrical building with quatrefoil angle towers and a raised centre. It is reached by a low gate house with round towers. (2,3) Eastnor Castle. A formal garden, adjacent to the south wing of the house is visible as cropmarks and has been mapped from aerial photographs. Rectangular borders surrounding a central circular area with a possible site of a central feature, such as a sundial, extend over an area measuring 13m by 12m. It is centred at SO 7349 3684. (6-7) |
