More information : The existence of a 2nd or 3rd century Roman temple at Custom Scrubs, dedicated to the Rustic Mars, may be inferred from altars found there, although no remains of a building have been recorded (1). Baddeley's description of the find-spot (2,3) as a stone quarry immediately adjoining the upper of two platforms used as vegetable plots for cottages some 50ft below the summit of the promontory may have led Miss Rudd (4) to locate it at the point of the headland (Area SO 891081). Two altars, found on the site between 1799 and 1801, are now in Gloucester Museum (2,6,10) and a third altar, discovered at the same spot in 1851, depicting a warrior with spear and shield, went to Cirencester Museum (2,7,10). A later article by Baddeley, referring to four altars from Custom Scrubs, preserved at Lypiatt Park, appears to be incorrect (8-10). (1-10) Roman tiles found at approximatley SO 89070802. (10)
