Summary : Sudbury is known to have been a mid-9th century market place from documentary evidence. The church (TL84SE24) was an important ecclesiastical centre from at least the early 8th century. The settlement was extant in 797 when Bishop Aelfhun of Dunwich died there. Ethelred II established a mint at Sudbury which minted from 978 until the 12th century, (TL84SE19). The East side of the `town' appears to be demarcated by the curvilinear line of Friars Street, Burkitts Lane and Croft Road. |
