Monument Number 115109

Hob Uid: 115109
Location :
Gloucestershire
Stroud
King's Stanley
Grid Ref : SO8305803488
Summary : Supposed 'ancient' earthwork noted in the 1920s and published on Ordnance Survey maps. Possibly part of the earthworks called Selsley Hill Camp in the late 19th century. Field investigation in 1971 found the earthwork little more than 0,7m high with a slight outer ditch. A field boundary of possibly Medieval, but probably later, date.
More information : (SO 83070345) Ancient Earthwork (NAT) (1)

Remains of ancient encampment or ancient boundary bank (2) possibly
part of the earthworks described by Witts as Selsley Hill Camp
covering some 30 acres (3). (2,3)

This is a boundary bank, often little more than a scarp 0.7m high
with a slight outer ditch. Possibly medieval but probably later
and representing a field boundary. Not a defensive work by reason
of size and situation. (4)

A curvilinear earthwork bank and ditch of uncertain date and function is visible as earthworks on historic aerial photographs and was mapped as part of the Severn Vale NMP project. Located on Selsley Common and centred at SO 83055 03493, these earthworks are recorded on the 1825 Ordnance Surveyors Drawing as a single curving bank, named as "remains of ancient encampment". The earthwork bank has since been truncated by large scale quarrying on the common, and is now visible in three sections, with an overall length of 112 metres and aligned W to ESE (SO 83008 03505 to SO 83113 03467). From west to ESE, the three sections measure about 41 metres long and 2.7 metres wide, 9.5 metres long and 3 metres wide and 29 metres long and 5.2 metres wide. A slight ditch is visible to the north of each section. Aerial photographs taken in 2014 indicate that the fragmented earthworks remain extant. (5-9)
