Summary : Roman quarry inscriptions cut on the rock face about above the River Eden on its west bank, south of Wetheral Cells. The inscription comprises the words MAXIMUS SCRIPSIT which is 75cm long comprising 9cm high letters, with LEG XXVV CONDRAUSISIUS 75cm away, and 50cm lower from the above, there is also the figure of a stag; followed by II, in letters between 6cm -14cm high.

Three Roman quarry inscriptions cut on the rock face about 10ft above the River Eden on its west bank, 25 yards south of Wetheral Cells (NY 45 SE 7). The first, MAXIMUS SCRIPSIT is 30 inches long with 3 - 1/2 inch high letters. 30 inches away, and 20 inches lower, LEG XXVV CONDRAUSISIUS, with the figure of a stag; followed by II, in letters usually 2 - 1/2 inches high, but 5 - 1/2 inches maximum. (2)

The inscriptions, at NY 46675350, are legible, though weathered, and are correctly noted above. (3)

NY 467534 St Constantine's cells (Wetheral Caves) and rock-cut Roman inscription, scheduled. (4)
