More information : (SO 84291897) Roman Sepulchral Remains found AD 1856 (NAT) (1) (Area SO 844189) An extensive Roman burial ground at Wotton Hill is indicated by the number of sepulchral finds recorded from there. A tombstone to Rufus Sita of of the Thracian cavalry, discovered in 1824 on land belonging to Mr Creed, near the junction of London Road and Denmark Road, is now in Gloucester Museum. Later finds include a much mutilated inscribed monument, now lost, to a soldier of the Twentieth Legion, many cremation urns and a large number of coins, chiefly of Tiberius, Claudius and Nero, from adjoining fields. In 1838 three more cremation urns were discovered close to the main road, and in 1870 one hunderd and ten cinerary urns were found on land belonging to JDT Niblett (sited to SO 84411894). (2-4)
