More information : [SO 88913412] Castle [NR] (Remains of) (1)
A building said to have been a castle and residence of King John, but more likely a farm of Tewkesbury Abbey. A moated and castellated house of the Tudor period. (2,3)
The house known as "King John's Castle" is probably of 15th c date. It is of architectural interest, though no longer castellated, and it seems that only the eastern part survives. See AO/66/100/1 & 2. There are no traces of a moat. (4)
A chapel which stood beside King John's Castle in 1540 had been demolished by 1830. Its existence suggests that the house may have been a lodging of the Abbots of Tewkesbury. (5)
King John's Castle, Grade II*. Remains of medieval castle with early C17 wing. Square stone rubble tower of 3 storeys, in C19 stepped back at each floor level and lowered.
Staggered windows. Blocked arched doorways of C15 at ground and 2nd floor levels. Built on to west side is early C17 wing with gable end and gable facing south, 3 storeys and attic, 2 windows, 3-light mullion-transom casements with leaded panes and dripmoulds. Tiled roof. Interior: stone fireplace. Although traditionally associated with King John it has more probable associations with the Abbey. (6) |
