The strength of the lower part of the tower suggests that it almost certainly originated as a vicar's pele, but there is now little external exidence of this. See photograph. (4)
Probably early 13th century with a tower of early 14th century and restorations of 1827-28 and 1860-62. Built with blocks of red sandstone, probably from Hadrian's Wall. Three storey square west tower and a nave/chancel of five bays. The fortified west tower was rebuilt above the string course before 1790 with a battlemented parapet of 1827 and corner pinnacles of 1828. An inscribed Roman altar was recarved in the 14th century. Grade 2. (5)
