Hob Uid: 117403
Location :
Gloucestershire
Cotswold
Withington
Grid Ref : SO9976816201
Summary : A deserted settlement is visible as earthworks east of Upper Hilcot Farm.
More information : SO 998163. Hilcot DMV. (1)

Remains are visible centred SO 998162. (2)

SO 998 162. Upper Hilcot listed in review of deserted Medieval villages in Gloucestershire. (3)

The deserted settlement referred to above (1-3) to visible as earthworks on aerial photographs and has been mapped as part of The Cotswold Hills NMP survey. The deserted settlement is defined by linear banks, scarps and ditches which represent house platforms, boundary banks and hollow ways and trackways. The earthworks are located east of Upper Hilcot Farm and west of the Hilcot Brook. The main features are two well defined rectangular house platforms, centred at SO 9985 1608; and a hollow way (SO 9979 1610 to SO 9987 1613) located south of the modern track. The lack of other house platforms may indicate that this is a deserted farmstead rather than a village or larger settlement. The deserted settlement is still visible as earthworks on aerial photographs taken in 2004. (4-5)
