More information : (Area NY 506 563) How Hill (1)
The How of How Hill is possibly a Tumulus (2) or a Motte (3)according to Collingwood. It is described by Hall as being a natural hill of sand about 50ft high, the upper portion of which is probably artificial. It has not been excavated (4). (2-4)
A natural feature, almost conical in shape with a somewhat flat and uneven summit. Although ideally suited for a motte with its commanding position, there is no evidence of the hill having been artificially worked, nor are there any traces of a tumulus. (5)
This location falls within the area mapped from aerial photographs by English Heritage's Hadrian's Wall NMP. Evidence from vertical photographs taken in 1946 supports the interpretation of the mound as a natural feature. (6) |
