Banks Burn Milecastle, No 53, is 393 yards east of Hare Hill Turret, 53a. Excavated in 1932, it measured 76' 6" and 72' E-W. (2)

The excavation in 1932 (authority 2) found that most of the milecastle had been robbed of masonry and the original floor had been removed so that no internal buildings remained. The north wall abutted Hadrian's Wall and some turf work of the turf milecastle remained in the north east corner and south section. When the milecastle area was examined in 1990 the RCHME found no surface trace. (4)
