Summary : New Mill was built between 1804 and 1806, and is of six-storeys with twenty-two bays, the six-window range at the centre is slightly advanced. The mill is built of red brick in Flemish bond with a slate roof. The internal structure is of cast-iron and timber. At the centre of the rear elevations is a semi-circular stair turret, which also has narrow vent-towers to each side. The detached engine house beyond the stair turret was partly rebuilt in the late 19th-early 20th century. The new engine house built in the early 20th century on conversion to rope drive has been demolished. A rare example of an early non-fireproof mill. |
