More information : (TG 18641314) DRAYTON LODGE (NR) (In Ruins) (1) The Lodge was built by Sir John Fastolf probably about 1437. It was `broken down' by the Duke of Suffolk in 1465. It is built of yellowish brick and is rectangular measuring internally 22ft 6ins by 16ft 3ins with a round tower 22ft circumference at each corner. The walls of the building are 2ft 8ins thick, while those of the towers vary from 1ft 3ins to 1ft 8ins. The entrance was on the south side and the SW tower appears to have had a staircase. There are remains of a fireplace in the west wall. (2,3) The descriptions in Auth 2 and 3 are mainly correct. The walls have a maximum height of 6.0m. There are small windows or loopholes in the upper part of the north and south towers and other larger windows in the SWw and SE walls. There are indications that the building had two storeys, and in the south west wall are the remains of what appears to be a fireplace for the upper floor. The entrance was in the SW wall, and the staircase was in the west tower. The remains are in good condition and have been restored in places. See ground photograph.
