Summary : The derelict town house of the Paston family, mainly circa 1600, on the site of the palace of the Bishops of Norwich. Built of rendered and colourwashed brick and flint with plain tile roofs, it is L-shaped in plan and comprises two-and-a-half storeys, with a lower two storey wing to the north west, single storey porches to the north and east, and a 19th century lean-to, two storey staircase extension to the west. |
More information : (TG 25530839) Thorpe Hall (NR) (TG 25510836) Chapel (NR) (1) An early C17th house said to incorporate the remains of a quadrangular late C14th house. It consists of one range with mullioned and transomed windows and a lower range at right angles to it. The building is attributed to Sir Edward Paston c1580. Until recently parts of the late C14th house and chapel remained. It belonged to the bishops of Norwich. Grade II*. (2,3) Known as Thorpe Old Hall. The southern portion of the east side and the chapel were pulled down when I renovated the property some 15 years ago. (4) The Hall is L-shaped and contains mullioned windows. There is no trace of the portion pulled down by Mr Ward, nor of the chapel, the site of which is occupied by a modern building. In the grounds is a fishpond of probable medieval date, and parts of the old garden wall, which is falling down, stand about 2.0m high. See ground photographs. (5) The building is now empty and in a very dilapidated state. See ground photographs. (6)
