More information : Quarry inscription seen 1600 and again in 1690 on lower quarry face in Crowdundle Quarries (NY 632295), 2-1/2 miles N of Kirkby Thore on the Cumberland/Westmorland boundary. Part (a) now built into wall of barn at Underwood Farm, Milburn (NY 645301). The rest now lost. A stone copy is now (1945) built into a wall in Chapel Street, Appleby (NY 62 SE 10); of this copy lines 4 and 5 have weathered away. (1)
Another inscription (b) seen 1690 on upper quarry face at Crowdundle. Now lost. (2)
A further inscription (c) seen about 1602 but lost by 1690. This was the fifth line, now missing, of the copy in Chapel Street, Appleby and appears to mark a date by giving the names of two consuls but the text as recorded agrees with no known pair of consuls. (3) |
