Summary : The Chester and Birkenhead Railway was authorised in 1837, opening as a single line in 1840 with a terminus at Grange Lane. Under the terms of the authorisation act, the Grange Lane terminus was to be equidistant from the 3 ferry embarkation points for Liverpool traffic. In 1842 the company purchased the Monks Ferry and extended the line to that as its rail / ferry terminal.
