More information : The earthwork remains of a platform with a flattened top were noted to the north of New House Farm at SO 6851 2291. This is thought possibly to be the remains of a Medieval motte. It measures c.20m across and is constructed on an west facing slope. On the lower ground (under orchards at the time of photography) to the west the earthworks of two large raised platforms with associated ditches were seen centred at SO 6846 2292. It is possible that these earthworks are associated with the mound to the east.
These features were mapped at 1:10,000 scale from aerial photographs as part of the English Heritage: Gloucestershire NMP project. (1)
Unusual location for a motte. However, the online Hertfordshire SMR shows a record for a brickworks recorded on the 1840 Tithe map at SO68522293. Possible confusion of interpretation based on an aerial photo. (2) |
