More information : According to local information extensive coal seams in the area led to an important coal mining industry. The 1948 aerial photograph shows active open cast coal mining taking place just above Thieveley Scout. The mine consisted of a narrow linear trench, orientated approximately northwest to southeast, which extended into the Countryside Survey area from the adjacent one kilometre square to the east. When the 1955 aerial photographs were taken the mine had recently been filled in and landscaped. As a result there is now little above ground evidence for this former mine. It is not shown on any of the maps.
The site appears to be fairly stable and there has probably been little change since the landscaping was completed. Now under rough grass and no obvious future threat. (1-8) |
