More information : [Approximate location SU 970/826]. Royal licence was obtained by Sir John Molyns in 1331 to impark 3 woods on his newly acquired manor (1a). In 1340, Molyns was given permission to impark the woods of Sywards Hill and Wynards with 300 acres adjoining, so creating a large park close to his manor house (1b). Reference was made in 1341 to "new imparking" of 50 acres (1c). The park continued in use after the Middle Ages; in the late 18th century, the Penn lords of the manor replaced their old mansion with a new house, a quarter of a mile to the west, in the middle of Stoke Park. The ornamental park was landscaped by Capability Brown and others, and now serves as Stoke Poges golf course. The western limit of the park is marked by a stream which forms the boundary with Farnham Royal parish. (1) |
