Oxford Kidlington Airport

Summary : A former military airfield opened in 1938, now an airport. During World War Two the airfield was assigned to 23 Group and was the parent airfield of the (similar sounding) Kiddington relief landing ground, (please see SP 42 SW 72) and of Croughton and Weston-on-the-Green satellite airfields. Kidlington's function was to host an Advanced Flying Unit (part of Training Command). The wartime airfield comprised landing surfaces made of steel matting (of an type used by the Army), temporary accomodation and 18 aircraft hangars including Bellman and Blister types. Since at least 1985 the site has been a civil airport for the Oxford area, now known as Oxford Kidlington Airport. This is also a centre for civil aviation training. The runways and other apects of airfield layout have been altered and extended since the war. A pillbox associated with the wartime defences of the airfield was extant in the late 1990s (please see SP 41 NE 55).
More information : Kidlington opened in 1938. During World War Two the airfield was assigned to 23 Group and was the parent airfield of the (similar sounding) Kiddington relief landing ground, and of Croughton and Weston-on-the-Green satellite airfields. 23 Group were based at South Cerney (Gloucestershire). Kidlington's function was to host an Advanced Flying Unit. The airfield comprised landing surfaces made of steel matting (Army track), temporary accomodation (for 1430 RAF and 468 WAAF personnel)and 18 aircraft hangars including Bellman, Blister and "Horace" types. In 1985 the use of the site was stated as "civil airport Oxford". (1)

The airfield is now known as Oxford Kidlington Airport. This is also a centre for civil aviation training. (4)
