Summary : A number of altars have been found in or near Birdoswald (Camboglanna). They comprise:- No. 1872 to Cocidius; No. 1885 to Cocidius and Jupiter; No. 1873 to the goddess Fortune; Nos 1874-76, 1878-1879, 1881-3, and 1886-95 to Jupiter; No. 1897 to Latis; Nos 1898-1901 to Mars; No. 1902 to the Mothers; No. 1903 to Ratis and No. 1905 to Silvanus. Altar No. 1877 is dedicated to Jupiter Optimus Maximus and features a swastika motif on top at the front, flanked by two enclosed crosses. An altar to the emperor Probus (AD 276-82) was found in 1960 at a point nearer to MC49 than Birdoswald fort. It is now in Carlisle Museum. |

They comprise:- No. 1872 to Cocidius; No. 1885 to Cocidius and Jupiter; No. 1873 to the goddess Fortune; Nos 1874-1879, 1881-3, and 1886-95 to Jupiter; No. 1897 to Latis; Nos 1898-1901 to Mars; No. 1902 to the Mothers; No. 1903 to Ratis and No. 1905 to Silvanus. NY 6166. Altar No. 1877 dedicated to Jupiter Optimus Maximus, features a swastika motif on top at the front, flanked by two enclosed crosses. (4)
