Summary : A Second World War bombing decoy at Wolviston. It was built as part of the 'C-series' of civil decoys to deflect enemy bombing from the Imperial Chemical Industries plant at Billingham. This site functioned as both a 'QF' and 'QL' decoy. The 'QF' decoy consisted of a series of controlled fires lit during an air raid to replicate a target struck by bombs. The 'QL' decoy featured a display of lights to simulate the active marshalling yards and factories that would be associated with a working chemical plant. The site is referenced as being in use during 1942 and 1943. Aerial photography from 1976 shows the remains of the base of a control building situated in scrubland. The control building would have housed an operations room and provided the decoy crew with shelter. Further civil bombing decoy sites for Middlesbrough were located at Grangetown, Bran Sands, Seal Sands, Greenabella, Cowpen Bewley, Newton Bewley, Grangetown, Elton, Middleton and Kirkleatham. |
