Summary : Second World War reinforced concrete pillbox with brick shuttering. This Type 24 pillbox was constructed with narrow walls and a brick skin. It is located in a field 300m west of Abbot's Court Farm, on the north side of a farm road and the west side of a stream to the east of Hoo St Werburgh. The pillbox faces east towards an anti tank ditch (Monument 1542610), and is part of the supporting defences of a Stop Line (Monument 1542577) constructed in 1940 across the south western third of the Hoo Peninsula, from the north bank of the Medway to the south bank of the Thames at Higham Creek. The pillbox and the rest of the Stop Line have been mapped from aerial photographs as part of the English Heritage: Hoo Peninsula Landscape Project. |

The pillbox described in authority 1 is visible on aerial photographs taken in May 1942 and is still extant. It faces east towards an anti tank ditch (Monument 1542610), and is part of the supporting defences of a Stop Line (Monument 1542577) constructed in 1940 across the south western third of the Hoo Peninsula, from the north bank of the Medway to the south bank of the Thames at Higham Creek. This structure and the rest of the Stop Line defences have been mapped from aerial photographs as part of the English Heritage: Hoo Peninsula Landscape Project. (2-3) |
