Summary : Site of Second World War heavy anti aircraft battery at Southwck. It was armed with four 3.7-inch static guns in 1942. On the basis of both map (1991) and recent air photo evidence, the HAA site at Southwick was classified in the gazetteer as Class 2 (Near Complete/Majority of Features Present), but a site visit on 1/6/2000 showed that the battery has subsequently been completely levelled. Traces of concrete and brick rubble were visible in the adjacent hedgerow, but other than this there was no apparent survival. |
More information : On the basis of both map (1991) and recent air photo evidence, the HAA site at Southwick was classified in the gazetteer as Class 2 (Near Complete/Majority of Features Present). A site visit on 1/6/2000 showed that the battery has subsequently been completely levelled, possibly because of the prescence of a Hampshire County Council signposted footpath running through it (and the attendant health and safety implications of allowing public access to a range of semi-derelict structures). Traces of concrete and brick rubble were visible in the adjacent hedgerow, but other than this there was no apparent survival. (1)
