Summary : The site of the Spa Wood Ironstone Mine that was opened during 1865 by Weardale Iron and Coal Ltd, and again in 1900 with the mine continuing production until 1931. Sir B Samuelson and Co Ltd owned the mine from 1910 and then from 1923 it was owned by Dorman, Long and Co Ltd. The evidence for the mine consists of the drift, a boiler house, a Sirocco fan house and workshops. Other extant features of the mine include the fan house, powder house and an electricity substation. The mine is located in Spa Wood on the south side of Alumwork Beck at Slapewath. |

Other extant features of the mine include the Walker fan house (NZ 61 NW 114), powder house (NZ 61 NW 115) and an electricity substation (NZ 61 NW 116). Mr. Simon Chapman, a local authority on mining and industrial archaeology in the north-east, reports that the fan house noted in sources 1-2 above is of the "Waddle" type not the "Walker" type. (3) |
