Summary : Post medieval/20th century sandstone quarries are visible as earthworks on air photographs. In the 11th century the quarries provided stone to Whitby Abbey, and continued to do so until the 14th century. It was also the source of stone for Covent Garden, the foundations of the old Waterloo and London Bridges, the 17th and 18th century Whitby Pier. Elements of the quarries remain visible on the latest 2009 vertical air photographs with elements under tree cover. |
More information : Extensive sandstone quarry in the Middle Jurassic Saltwick Formation which may have been the stones source of many East Yorkshire Anglian and Anglo-Scandinavian sculptures. In the 11th century it provided stone to Whitby Abbey, and continued to do so until the 14th century. It was also the source of stone for Covent Garden, the foundations of the old Waterloo and London Bridges, the 17th and 18th century Whitby Pier, and many other public buildings. (1)
