| Summary : One of two quarries used extensively during the Mediaeval period, and later, the other being to the north and east of Stapleton Park. The quarrying of Magnesian limestone from the Permian Cadeby Formation has been recorded at Stapleton since circa 1300. During the 14th century it was used at Rochester, Sion Abbey, Windsor Castle, Westminster Hall, Westminster Abbey nave, and the royal house at Henley. Fron 1399 it was supplied stone for York Minster, and in 1400 for the Tower of London. During the 15th century it was used in the royal palace at Sheen, Sion Abbey, and Eton College. Extensive quarrying of the stone continued into the 20th century at Castle Hill Wood. |
