Summary : Five eight-storey tower blocks built as public housing, known respectively as Ailsa House, Gerard House, Thorald House, Waryn House and York House on the Thorpe Edge estate. The first four blocks contain 48 dwellings each, providing 192 dwellings in total. Each block consists of two linked slabs. construction is traditional front and back with concrete panel sides. The fifth block, York House, was constructed by a different contractor and is U-plan in form. The block originally contained 101 dwellings, which later became 125 dwellngs. Construction started on all five blocks in 1955 and was completed in 1957. |
