Location :
North Yorkshire

Summary : Extensive earthworks remains of part of the First World War Ripon Camp and some possible post medieval features are visible on historic air photos north-east of Plumpton Hall and between Sike Beck and the River Skell. The key elements of this part of the military camp that were identified from the air photos are groups of hut and building platforms, rectilinear enclosure, networks of paths, roads and trackways, possible exercise yards and other terraces, ditches, drains, banks, pits and hollows. Most of these features appear to have been levelled on more recent air photos though some small areas of earthworks may have survived.
More information : Extensive earthworks mostly the remains of the First World War Ripon Camp and some earlier features are visible on historic air photos. These military camp earthworks were between Studley Road and Sike Beck at SE295 704. There are clusters of hut platforms around SE2912 7056, SE2945 7046 and SE2963 7042 and a larger platform at SE2931 7062 that may have been an exercise yard. A fairly regular but intermittent network of paths and trackways can be detected visible across the whole area. A substantial trackway or perhaps tramway leads from the Studley Road (SE2944 7070) south-eastward over Sike Beck at SE2984 7047. The trackway and bridge running between SE2975 7044 and SE2983 7063 probably have earlier origins, the bridge is named as Rose Bridge on the Ordnance Survey 1856 map. Many of the camp features were cut into or built upon medieval or post medieval ridge and furrow (UID 1517791). The mapping of this site undertaken for the Yorkshire Henges and their Environs Project (UID 1474422) represents and overview of this very complex earthworks and more detail is contained within the air photos listed below. Most of these features appear to have been levelled on the 2002 Google Earth air photos air photos but the 2006 lidar-derived images suggest small areas of earthwork survived at SE2927 7026 and SE2980 7062.
