NY 7363 Bastle (site of) (See Type-site NY 88 SE 14). Pulled down in 1954, the bastle measured 38 feet by 24 feet with walls 4 feet thick. It consisted of two full storeys, an attic and watch turret in the east gable. The ground floor had two loopholes, 5" in diameter, in splayed appertures. (5)
The strong house was a rectangular building like a bastle but with three storeys and a look-out turret corbelled out from the top of its east gable.Its design was similar to the design at Haltwhistle Castle Hill, and was probably the work of the same builder between 1607 and 1611. (6) |
