Civil Bombing Decoy C2d

Summary : A Second World War bombing decoy site at Greenabella. It was built as part of the 'C-series' of civil decoys to deflect enemy bombing from Middlesbrough. This was a 'QF' decoy, which consisted of a series of controlled fires lit during an air raid to replicate a target struck by bombs. It is referenced as being in use during 1943. Aerial photography from 1984 shows two buildings associated with the decoy extant at the site (see HOB UID 956726). Further civil bombing decoy sites for Middlesbrough were located at Grangetown, Bran Sands, Grangetown, Cowpen Bewley, Newton Bewley, Wolviston, Elton, Middleton and Kirkleatham.The two buildings were still extant in 2012 and appear to be the control bunker and possibly a generator building.

A Second World War 'QF' bombing decoy located at Greenabella (NZ 514 261). It was constructed as part of the 'C-series' of civil decoys to deflect enemy bombing from Middlesbrough. It is referenced as being in use on 01-MAY-1943. Further civil bombing decoy sites for Middlesbrough were located at Bran Sands (NZ 559 236), Seal Sands (NZ 513 246), Grangetown (NZ 572 218), Cowpen Bewley (NZ 494 241), Newton Bewley (NZ 475 260), Wolviston (NZ 437 263), Elton (NZ 394 180), Middleton (NZ 481 114) and Kirkleatham (NZ 616 193). The two buildings were still extant in 2012 and appear to be the control bunker and possibly a generator building. This website has good photographs of both these buildings. (6)
