Clatworthy Camp

Hob Uid: 188442
Location :
Somerset
Somerset West and Taunton
Clatworthy
Grid Ref : ST0460031500
Summary : Earthwork remains of an Iron Age univallate hillfort.
More information : [CENTRED : ST 04603150] CAMP [GT]. (1)

Clatworthy Camp, or the Castle, a roughly triangular enclosure with a rounded apex at the west end, occupying the end of a long ridge which falls steeply on the N. and W. sides and more gradually on the S. The main defence is a bank of earth and stones with a ditch below, except on the S. where the defence is a scarp and ditch. The original entrance is on the S.W. and another at the S.E. corner, where the bank has been altered by agriculural operations. (2)

[Plan: photo AO/63/374/5]. Univallate Hill Fort (3).

The hillfort is as described but for the main entrance. This is on the S.E. and clearly of inturned type though mutilated by agricultural digging. Another gap in the W, may be original.

Surveyed at 1/2500 (4)

ST 046 315. Clatworthy. Listed in gazetteer as a univallate hillfort covering 4.8ha. (5)

The bank and ditch of the hillfort described by the previous authorities was not visible on aerial photographs because of tree cover. (6)

HE Reconnaissance aerial photographs taken in 2010 show the faint cropmark of a ring ditch within the hill fort. This is situated on the south side close to the line of the ramparts at ST 0455 3144. It is estimated to measure less than 10m in diameter and may be the remains of an Iron Age hut cirlce or a Bronze Age barrow. (7)
