Grid Ref : ST2280033500
Summary : Earthwork remains of a large Iron Age univallate hillfort.
More information : [ST 228335] Ruborough Camp [GT] (1)

Ruborough Camp (Rowberrow, Rowborough, Roborough) is a triangular-shaped promontory fort, comprising double bank with medial ditch. The entrance was apparently in the west where there is, also, an outlying bank and ditch. Collins (4) says there was a strong legend of buried treasure here, the Camp being known locally as 'The Money Field'. (2-4)

Ruborough Camp is an Iron Age promontory fort at the eastern end of a steep sided ridge. The two western defences are connected in the south by a small bank, and along the north side by a large field boundary, probably made from an original rampart.
Published survey (1/2500) revised. (5)

ST 227 335. Ruborough Camp, SAM No 333. (6)

A plan and illustration of Ruborough Camp by Burrow are present, together with a short description. (7)

ST 227335. Ruborough. Listed in gazetteer as a multivallate hillfort with widely spaced ramparts covering 1.9ha. (8)

Ruborough Camp; scheduled as a large univallate hillfort. (9)

Ruborough Camp was surveyed at a scale of 1: 1000 using EDM and differential GPS as part of the EH archaeological survey of the Quantock Hills AONB. The hillfort earthworks are well preserved and comprise a triangualr enclosure with an outwork to the west, linked to the enclosure. In the historic period, Ruborough Camp was part of Willoughby Farm and a barn was constructed in the hillfort ditch. Full details of the survey are contained in the EH survey report (10, 11).
