More information : [ST 49023042] ROMAN BUILDINGS [G.S.] (sites of) (1)
At Littleton, Mr. Hasell found in 1822, in his orchard what at first appeared to be three distinct Roman villas. Later discoveries led him to think this was either one large villa or a village, because he found an area of thirty acres entirely covered with buildings. The actual finds mentioned were:- foundations of walls of herring-bone structure, bricks, tiles, coins, fragments of mosaic pavements, etc. (2). Haverfield considered this account to be an exaggration (3). Dewar thought it would be impossible to check the site due to modern building but Capt. and Mrs. Sanderson of Littleton House have a fairly extensive collection of pottery, 2nd to 4th Cent. A.D., and a coin of Gallienus (A.D. 253 - 268), from their grounds (4). (2-4)
In the orchard behind Bartlett's Farm are a number of incomprehensible surface irregularities. The farmer has not found any Roman material or encountered any wall foundations when working in the surrounding fields. Capt. Sanderson has left the district. (5)
SO 15 Listed as the possible site of a Roman villa. (6)
