More information : [ST 49406805] A Probably IA promontory camp, at Backwell,
was discovered from the air and investigated on the ground in 1933.
A roughly triangular area was defended on two sides by a stone bank
and outer ditch. There was no entrance unless a slight depression
in the south-east bank was the remains of one (1). By 1956 (2) the
earthwork had nearly been destroyed by quarrying and only part of
the east bank remained. No finds were known. (1-2)
No remains of the promontory fort can now be found. The quarry
occupies a considerable area and has been disused in the last two
years. (3)
