Pagans Hill

Hob Uid: 198024
Location :
Bath And North East Somerset
Bath And North East Somerset
Chew Stoke
Grid Ref : ST5572662606
Summary : A Roman temple with subsequent Early Medieval and Medieval settlement is known on Pagans Hill through excavation. Excavations between 1949-53 found it was built shortly after AD 258, but soon fell into decay. Domestic occupation continued into the 5th century. The temple was octagonal in plan and had a well and complex of buildings to the north and east. The location of the temple is defined on aerial photographs by defined by a sub circular mound which measures 15 metres in diameter. There was evidence for 7th-8th century (Saxon) and 12th century (medieval) settlement. A Bronze Age arrowhead and a Iron Age ditch were also recorded.
More information : [ST 55726260] ROMAN TEMPLE [A.T.] (Site of). (1)

A Roman temple on Pagans Hill, Chew Stoke was excavated by
P. Rahtz from 1949-53(2,3). The name is a modern corruption of
earlier forms of Peynes or Pagnes Hill. The temple was found
to be octagonal and there was a well and buildings on the east
and north of the temple. Traces of prehistoric occupation were
found beneath the temple and an IA 'A' ditch lay under the
eastern buildings [see plan & section AO/62/311/6] (5). The
temple was built soon after A.D. 258 and was soon in decay
and subsequent occupation is apparently domestic and
intermittent until the 5th.c. In the 7-8th.c. there is evidence
of occupation by finds in the temple well, including a D.A.
glass jar (4). The site was again occupied in the 12th.c.
Stone robbing removed much of the walling up to the early
19th.c. Finds include 250 Roman coins of 3rd/4th.c. date; IA 'A'
potsherds of the 4th.c. BC; a 7/8th. c. glass jar, 72 flints of
which 13 are classifiable as implements including an E.B.A.
single-barbed arrowhead, and 12-14th.c. Md. potsherds. All the
finds are in Bristol City Museum. [See plan AO/62/311/1 from
(3)]. (2-5)

Air photographs show vague, indeterminate markings in the area. (6)

The site of the temple is under pasture but it is indicated by
a slight unsurveyable circular platform which coincides with
the O.S siting. (7)

From villa site: Roman curses (8)

From villa site: writing tablet (9)

A Roman probable building platform is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs. This is defined by a sub circular mound which measures 15 metres in diameter. The excavated sections (see source 4, plate 6) of this mound indicate that it is almost entirely composed of Roman deposits (10).
