Summary : A cave system discovered in 1966 during the construction of an office block. The caves proved to be filled with debris of largely 16th century date, and excavation and clearance showed that caves had been used as maltings. One featured the original malting kiln carved out of the rock, while another contained a well. Near to the well was a garderobe, so far the only such underground facility discovered in Nottingham, which contained some potsherds dating to circa 1250AD, the earliest secure date for activity associated with the numerous Nottingham caves. The Castle Gate complex is scheduled. |
More information : (SK 57213978). Cellar under No 8 Castle Gate. Scheduled. (1)
