More information : (NZ 09022218) Old Lodge (NAT) (1)

".... an ancient outpost and guard to the Castle".
(Raby Castle NZ 12 SW 2). (2)

Old Lodge is an L-shaped tower-house of 3 storeys with walls of coursed rubble c.10m high surmounted by a flat roof with low
parapet. It is situated upon an isolated knoll with the Langley Beck on the south and west and a natural gully upon the NE and east. (3)

The name 'Old Lodge' is still in use. The tower is built on what
appears to be a partly artificial and partly natural mound, possibly utilised at an earlier period than the tower. Remains of a drystone wall can be traced around the base of the mound. The building was considerably restored c.1896, most windows and doorways being of that date. Porch, and outbuildings to the west are also modern. The walls are c.6ft thick. There are two machicolations above the south doorway. Little is known of the history of the building other than its use as a hunting lodge, but its style would appear to date it to the latter half of the 14th century. (4)

The Old Lodge, Grade II*; 15th or 16th century Pele Tower. (5)

Previous report F2 confirmed, the Pele Tower is in good condition and used as a private dwelling. Published survey (25") revised. (6)

Listed by Cathcart King. (7)
