More information : [ST 74613218] MOTTE & BAILEY [GT]. (1)
Mrs. Harfield describes this site as a motte and Bailey, having a bowl like enclosure to the north of the motte, within the defences. VCH however, state that owing to afforestation it is difficult to say whether the ditched mount in Cockroad Wood, had an attached Bailey. Clearly a motte with two baileys (APs.RAF.CPE/UK.1924, Jan.1947,1258-9). (2-4)
This is a motte with two baileys, one to the S. the other to the N.W., the whole situated along a ridge running N-S. The southern bailey appears to have been divided into three smaller enclosures and there is evidence of a slight platform at the junction of these. No masonry is apparent in the construction and there is no obvious entrance, though there may have been one to the east of the motte where the ditch around the southern bailey terminates. The small counterscarp, part way down the bank around the southern bailey, appears to be contemporary but has no obvious purpose. Surveyed at 1:2500. (5) Bailey on the NW side included in schedule.
