Location :

Summary : Excavations and quarrying in the 19th century uncovered a Roman courtyard villa, inhumations and cremations, the coins were mainly Constantinian; the villa was supposedly destroyed by quarrying. A possible Saxon spearhead was also found.
More information : [ST 7614 6219 Roman Villa [AT] (Site of) (1)

A Roman villa, of courtyard type, south of Trinity Church,
Monkton Combe, was found and destroyed in building works and
quarrying from 1854-63. No exact plan was made but a hypocaust
and several rooms around a courtyard are recorded. finds include
c.230 coins ;(mainly Constantinian), Samian and other potsherds,
metal objects and a possible Saxon spearhead.

In 1822 and 1854, inhumation burials were found west of the
villa and more than five stone coffins, associated with inurned
cremations and a cist containing a horse's skull. One coffin
lid was a re-used inscribed stone, temp Marcus Aurelius Antoninus.
Skinner is said to have excavated a barrow close to the site
after noting Roman remains in c. 1826 [No reference found in
cursory check of Skinner MSS at BM] (4) Crawford notes a stone
coffin, found in 1933, at ST 7599 6210 (5). Two small coffins
found, at some unspecified time, are standing in an alcove at
'Belmont', ST 7611 6223. (2-6)

There are two large fragments of a broken coffin (see G.P.
AO/65/248/7) in the garden of Combe Edge, Beechwood Road - the
house indicated by Crawford, but their precise find-spot is
unknown. The coffins formerly at "Belmont" seem to have been
lost and there is no knowledge of any recent finds from this
vicinity. The barrow said to have been excavated by Skinner
cannot be located. (7)

AV 9 A Roman villa and burial. A hypocaust and several rooms reported. The County Council reports that a survey only was conducted here; they also report that no features are now visible. (8)
