Palladian Bridge

Hob Uid: 204176
Location :
Bath And North East Somerset
Bath And North East Somerset
Bath
Grid Ref : ST7607563325
Summary : The Palladian Bridge at Prior Park was built by Richard Jones in 1755. It was originally assumed to have been designed by John Wood the Elder but evidence suggests that it was, in fact, Jones. One of just four of its kind in the world, it was constructed according to Palladio's famous bridge design and is identical to the Palladian Bridge at Wilton Estate, Wiltshire. Built of Bath stone, the bridge is roofed and features an open colonnade of four Ionic columns between two pedimented pavilions containing arched openings. The bridge was constructed during the second of three phases in the garden's development. In addition to building the bridge, the garden was extended downhill, a cascade formed half way down, some planting undertaken and the lakes were created.
More information : ST 761632 A Palladian bridge in the grounds of Prior Park (ST 76 SE 63) was built between 1750 and 1760, being a copy of the one at Wilton (SU 03 SE 6) built in 1736. The bridge is roofed and has two pedimented end pavilions with arched openings and an open colonnade of four Ionic columns between. HHR Grade 1. (1)

A roofed bridge is shown at ST 76087332 on OS 1:2500 1970, but not described. (1-3)

The architect of the bridge is unknown; some suggest John Wood the Elder, but he died in 1754, or it could have been a copy of the bridge at Wilton. Working drawings were drawn up by Richard Jones or 'Capability' Brown. It is most likely to have been an inspired copy by Jones. (4)

Richard Jones claimed to have designed the bridge, but it is more likely to have been Wood. (7)

According to the National Trust this is only one of four Palladian Bridges in the world. (10)

Forsyth notes that Richard Jones built the bridge in 1755. He also describes the phases of development of the landscaped garden at Prior Park. The building of the Palladian Bridge took place during the second of three phases. (11)
