More information : [ST 87407069] Corsham Court [GT]. (1) Corsham Court was built in 1582 on the md. site by Thomas Smytle and remodelled twice in the 18th c. In 1800 it was enlarged again and altered in 1845. The grounds and some landscape-buildings are 18th c. A stable block is late 16th c. (2) The Md deer-park was enclosed by a stone wall (3) There is a late 16th or 17th c. dovecote (4). (2-4) Only the centre portion of the Elizabethan frontage remains, the rest of the building having been remodelled. Of some architectural importance but mostly outside the Division's sphere of interest. See G.P. (5) Corsham Court Large well-known house in extensive park of fine amenity with lake and fine avenue of trees. Originally built in 1582 by "Customer Smythe", the house has undergone many alterations. As it now stands the centre of the S. elevation and the inner elevations of the side wings retain their original Elizabethan character; E. and W. sides by "Capability" Brown, the former remodelled by Joseph Nash who added octagonal turrets; N. front by Bellamy (c.1848) who also did away with hall and converted ground floor into entrance lobby and two rooms with bedrooms over. Grade I (6) Country house constructed in 1582 for T. Symthe, enlarged in 1760-6 by L. Brown for P. Methuen. Alterations were carried out in 1795-1803 by J. Nash for P.G Methuen, and in 1846-9 by T.
